Growing Phytoplankton is relatively easy and in expensive. Here is a picture of what you will need to get started.

  • Ridged tubing with air stones

  • Sterile cotton swabs

All of this can be obtained at Florida Aqua Farms via our links page.

Soak your Micro Algae discs in RO/DI water for 24 hours in the dark to loosen the algae off its feeding media.

Soak discs in RO/DI water for 24 hours

Microwave RO/DI water for 15 minutes

Then sterilize some RO/DI water in a microwave for about 7 minutes. After that bring the specific gravity to about 1.019 with a quality sea salt.

After 24 hours, scrape the algae out of the disc using the supplied sterile cotton swab. Gently swirl the water in the plate until the algae is loose then pour the contents in the bottle. Wash the plate if necessary to get any remaining algae. Use one disc per bottle. Then add 1ml of micro algae grow. The bottle on the left has a new batch of algae while the bottle on the left does not.

Place the bottles in front of a light source. 16 hours on and 8 hours off with air stones at the bottom with a light roll of bubbles to keep the algae moving and aerated.  I tip my bottles upside down to minimize the potential for settling. It will still be necessary to lightly stir the algae daily to prevent any possible settling.

This is what the Phyto looks like after ten days. Take these bottles, pour half of each into a clean soda bottle and put it in the fridge. Shake daily to prevent settling. Take the other half of each and pour each into two new soda bottles, top off with new RO/DI water with a specific gravity of 1.019 after you nuke the new water for 7 minutes, add more micro algae grow, replace air stones, and repeat the process forever.
